Ethereal Presence
Mammoth Ivory on Wildwood base.

This special piece was made specifically for the 2008 Mystic Scrimshanders International scrimshaw competition, where it received First Place in the Color Nautical Division. Trying to step out of my normal “box” of wildlife themes, I decided to etch a nautical scene. The idea of harpies, sirens and mermaids are intriguing ones. These sailors are making a valiant attempt to overcome great odds. The turbulent waters and craggy rocks are the least of their problems. After spending months or years out to sea, the enticement of the mermaids may prove more then these sailors can resist. There shipmates are undoubtedly looking for their wayward friends.
